Live port storage project delivered without disrupting operations at Kerfoot Oils

Shanco delivered a £500k reinforced concrete bund and piled plinth package at Kerfoot Oils’ live port facility in Goole, creating safe bulk oil storage infrastructure and helping the client move from regular deliveries to on-site storage capacity.

The Project

Kerfoot Oils needed a new bulk storage area to support a shift from regular oil deliveries to larger on-site storage. Shanco was appointed to deliver a 500,000 litre reinforced concrete bund to house fourteen steel silos for the storage of cooking oils, along with the structural support needed beneath the tanks.

The works included site remediation and investigation, the location and exposure of existing utility services, and an extensive piling package to prepare the area for construction. Shanco also removed part of the existing wall so the new bund could tie into the live facility and extend the existing arrangement.

The Brief

Shanco’s role was to deliver a durable reinforced concrete storage structure that could be completed within a critical programme and built into a live industrial setting without disrupting day-to-day operations.

The finished solution needed to support fourteen steel silos on reinforced plinths, with the plinths founded on 120 CFA piles to provide the strength required for long-term use.

The Challenge

Programme was a major factor from the outset. Kerfoot Oils was changing its storage model, so the new facility had to be ready in line with that operational shift.

The site itself added another layer of pressure. The project was carried out within a live port environment, with regular deliveries and ongoing activity across the wider dock. Existing services also had to be identified and managed before the new structure could be built, and the new reinforced concrete works had to connect into the existing bund arrangement.

How Shanco Delivered

As Principal Contractor, Shanco put months of pre-start planning into the job and engaged with the client and design team at an early stage to confirm technical details before works began on site. That early input helped protect the programme and gave the project team a clear route into construction.

The tank plinths were formed in reinforced concrete and supported by 120 no. 450mm CFA piles. Shanco then cast new 2m reinforced concrete walls and slab sections to extend the bund and create the storage area required for the new silos.

Because the works sat within a busy dock setting, Shanco also worked with Associated British Ports to put the right environmental and risk management procedures in place for the site, helping the team manage access, safety and site operations throughout the build.

The Results

Shanco delivered the new bulk storage infrastructure needed for Kerfoot Oils to move from delivery-based supply to on-site storage, while maintaining control of programme, safety and site coordination in a live port environment.

The finished package gave the client a strong, durable storage solution and showed Shanco’s ability to deliver technical civils works where planning, coordination and live-site management matter as much as the build itself.
