Shanco recently partnered with long-term client Elite Systems to support an exciting modular expansion project for Cwrt Rawlin Primary School. This project involved delivering a new modular childcare unit to extend teaching space and enhance facilities for students and staff alike. Our expertise in groundworks and dedication to safety ensured that all work was completed smoothly and safely, even within a live school environment.

The Project

The project focused on the installation of a modular childcare unit, which would add valuable teaching and childcare space to the existing school. In addition to laying the groundwork for the modular building, our team was responsible for drainage modifications, pathway formation, car park reconfiguration, and soft landscaping around the site.

The Challenge

Due to the school’s sloped landscape, we faced challenges with both foundation work and drainage. The foundations required a multi-level approach to accommodate the slope, and rerouting the existing drainage systems presented additional complexity. Working in an active school environment, we also needed to uphold stringent safety standards and operational measures to ensure minimal disruption to students, staff, and daily activities.

The Approach

Our team began by addressing the site’s unique sloping terrain. We implemented pad foundations at varying levels to ensure stability, followed by the construction of blockwork piers to support the modular unit. To handle drainage, we rerouted existing systems around the building’s footprint, managing significant depths in some areas to ensure alignment with live public sewer connections under necessary licences. In the live school setting, safety was our top priority: exclusion zones, secure fencing, and scheduling around peak times helped maintain safe operations with minimal disruption.
