At Shanco, our people are at the heart of everything we do, so we wanted to shine a spotlight on the very people who make Shanco so great. Today we’re shining that spotlight on Joe Marsay, one of our Senior Engineers, who plays a key role in keeping Shanco’s projects running to plan – and whose enthusiasm for construction started long before he ever stepped on site.

“I’ve always been curious about how things are built,” Joe says. “Even as a kid, I wanted to know how things came together. Construction felt like the perfect mix of problem-solving and hands-on work.”
At Shanco, Joe is responsible for reviewing blueprints and technical details once a project is confirmed, ensuring everything is precisely in place before work begins. “It’s my job to make sure we’re technically ready,” he explains. That includes collaborating closely with clients and their design teams, resolving design issues, and offering value engineering proposals where needed. But it also involves something just as important: supporting his colleagues on site.
“I try to make sure the engineers and wider site teams have everything they need: clear information, technical guidance, and a plan that works,” he says. “Good communication really is the key.”
Joe thrives on the variety of challenges his role brings. He describes every project as a learning opportunity, a new puzzle to solve and a new way to grow. “One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing something you’ve helped design come to life on site,” he says. “There’s a real sense of pride in that.”
So, what does it take to do the job well? For Joe, it’s a combination of strong communication, problem-solving, and organisation. “There are a lot of moving parts and tasks to manage at once, so staying organised helps me work efficiently and keeps the wider team running smoothly too,” he explains. “And being able to spot issues in drawings early can save a lot of time and avoid problems down the line.”
When asked what makes Shanco special, Joe’s answer is simple. “The people. Everyone’s hard-working, but also supportive. There’s a real sense of teamwork and care for the job, and for each other.”
Outside of work, Joe likes to keep things balanced with plenty of time spent with family and friends, and staying active wherever possible, whether that’s running, going for walks, or hitting the gym.
His advice to someone thinking about joining the construction industry? “Just go for it. You’ll be amazed how many opportunities are out there once you get started. Try to find a company that values you and your work, it makes all the difference.”
Three words to describe the Shanco team? “Hardworking. Caring. Teamwork.” We couldn’t agree more.
