At Shanco, we believe in building more than just infrastructure. We help create environments where people and communities can live and thrive. Our recent project at Twyn School in Wales is a great example of that ethos in action. Delivered in partnership with modular construction specialists Elite Systems, this project was commissioned by the Department for Education and focused on expanding childcare provision with a brand-new modular facility.

A Purpose-Driven Groundworks Project
Our goal was to carry out the full groundworks and external landscaping package to support a new modular development, transforming a former playing field into a vibrant, functional early years space. The new facility will serve 48 children aged two and three, providing essential teaching, learning, and play spaces. In a growing community, it’s a project that will have a long-lasting impact, especially for working parents who rely on quality local childcare.

Solving Problems Below the Surface
The site didn’t come without its fair share of challenges, however. A high-water table and poor ground conditions required a proactive and flexible approach. We began by cutting into the existing bank and removing unsuitable material before installing a 400mm thick pile mat of Type 1 stone to support piling works. With stability ensured, we progressed to ducting and foul drainage installation to support future services.
One of the most technically involved elements was a 75-metre masonry retaining wall with a reinforced concrete base and thickening detail. The finished wall not only secures the site but also seamlessly integrates visually with the nursery and surrounding housing.
Flood Resilience Built In
Given the site’s susceptibility to flooding, we developed and incorporated a durable, sustainable drainage strategy. We constructed tiered swales, rain gardens with Arbosiol Hydro Max, and linked systems that filter and redirect rainwater efficiently. Additional features such as flow control manholes and concrete headwalls were added to maximise flood resilience.

Safe, Playful, and Practical Spaces
Alongside the functional elements, we created a safe and playful environment for the children. Rubber crumb surfacing was installed in specific zones to provide soft, secure play areas. Elsewhere, we installed impermeable hard landscaping with curved edging to help direct water to nearby swales.
The project concluded with a newly constructed staff car park and a bellmouth entrance completed under a Section 278 License, in close collaboration with Caerphilly County Borough Council. Every detail was delivered to their rigorous inspection standards.
